The two ways concrete gets up a building
Mobile boom pumps handle most low- and mid-rise work: truck arrives, boom unfolds, pour, leave. Past the boom’s reach — practically somewhere around 4–6 storeys depending on access — high-rise work shifts to a static line: a high-pressure trailer or truck-mounted pump feeding vertical pipework up the structure, ending in a tower-mounted hydraulic placing boom that walks up with the building. The static-line system is a piece of temporary works in its own right: anchored pipe runs, thrust blocks, cleanout provisions, and a placing boom whose mast climbs on the core or through the slabs.
What high-rise pumping demands of the mix
Pumping a few hundred vertical metres is a materials problem as much as a mechanical one. The mix must stay plastic and pumpable through the line (superplasticisers, retarders, controlled aggregate grading) without segregating under pressure; pump pressure rises with height and the pipeline becomes a significant head of concrete that must never be allowed to set in place. Burj-class projects pushed single-stage pumping past 600 m; ordinary towers live far inside that envelope, but the discipline is identical — the mix, the line and the pour schedule are designed together, and a weather or crane delay that strands concrete in 300 m of pipe is a five-figure incident.
Pour-day discipline
Most pumping failures are logistics failures: truck spacing that starves or floods the pump, no standby pump on a critical pour, cleanout water with nowhere legal to go, or a placing-boom move that wasn’t sequenced with the formwork cycle. The well-run pour has a truck cadence matched to placement rate, a standby unit for pours that cannot stop (transfer decks, cores, mats), agreed hold points with the concretor, and — increasingly — the whole thing timestamped: batch time on the docket, on-site slump/flow test, time into the pump, time placed.
What pump telemetry now records
Modern pumps log strokes, pressures, volumes and downtime; batch plants timestamp every docket; admixtures are scanned at the truck. Assembled, that is a minute-by-minute record of a pour — evidence for the classic disputes: was the concrete too old when placed, who caused the cold joint, how much was actually placed versus batched, what stopped and for how long. Builders who file pour records against the element (docket, tests, timeline, photos) settle these arguments from the record; everyone else settles them from invoices and memory.
The cost logic
Pumping is priced per cubic metre plus establishment, but the real economics are programme: a placing boom that turns a 6-hour crane-and-kibble pour into a 3-hour pump pour releases the crane to every other trade, and a reliable pour cycle is the heartbeat of a concrete-frame programme. As with cranes, the cheap option that slows the cycle is the expensive option — price pumping strategy at project level, against hook time and cycle days, not per cube.
