Procore Technologies (NYSE: PCOR) has entered a definitive agreement to acquire DroneDeploy for approximately US$845 million in cash, subject to customary purchase price adjustments. Procore describes DroneDeploy as a robotics and visual intelligence platform used on over 3 million jobsites across more than 180 countries, capturing three-dimensional aerial and ground imagery through drones, ground-deployed robots and mobile, fixed and wearable cameras. The deal has not closed, it requires regulatory clearance, and the "digital coworkers" that see, understand and act inside Procore are a stated strategy rather than a product a builder can buy this quarter — Procore’s own guidance excludes the acquisition. The dataset figures are the companies’ own, unaudited. And the operational catch is unchanged by any acquisition: reality capture only produces trustworthy progress data when someone flies or walks the site on a fixed cadence and the captures are registered to the same coordinates every time. That discipline is a site management problem, not a software feature.

What it means for builders

The direction of travel is that the system holding your commercial record now wants to hold your as-built imagery too. That is genuinely useful — progress claims, defects and delay events all argue better with imagery attached — and it concentrates leverage with one vendor. Two practical responses. If you use DroneDeploy alongside a different project platform, put the integration and data-export question to both vendors in writing before your next renewal, because roadmaps after a close are nobody’s guarantee. And whatever you use, make sure every capture carries a date, a location and a link to the activity it evidences: that is the part that survives a change of software.
